"True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others, at whatever cost.”
-Arthur Ashe

The volunteer that deserves recognition for being a true hero.

Jamie Fleming
Winner of the Unsung Hero of the Year Award

Since joining United Way’s Board of Directors in 2005, Jamie’s commitment to United Way has been unwavering. Not long after joining United Way’s Board of Directors, Jamie joined in community investment – the allocation and review process for programs funded by United Way.  He visited agencies and met with staff delivering programs, from crisis support to rehabilitation. This was the beginning of his future role as Chair of Community Investment Committee in 2008.  In this role, he has led many volunteers and non-profit organizations through the yearly allocation of funds process. Ensuring that every dollar invested into United Way’s 65 programs and Innovation Grants are making a difference in people’s lives is his priority. This s a major responsibility that is often overlooked.  Meeting with agencies, reviewing program budgets, identifying program outcomes are just a few of the long list of criteria he works through.  His empathy, ability to reason and his strong leadership skills serve him well, enabling teams of volunteers to make sound funding decisions that ultimately impact thousands of families, children and adults. And like many things that happen in the world of non for profit, this all takes place quietly, without fanfare.
