We provide participants with opportunities to take risks within a supportive environmnent so that they may develop the self-confidence to meet the challenges presented to them in other parts of their lives. Mainstream also offers a broad range of courses in an effort to increase participants vocational, life, social, and literacy and numeracy skills.

Program Investment by United Way:
1. Mainstream Resource Centre
The Resource Centre Program uses an adult education model but is unique in that the program participants choose their own course of action and set their schedule, based on their current needs and interests. Small group and one to one instruction takes place in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere where individuals are encouraged to set personal goals and make independent choices. Courses are offered in the areas of vocational training, volunteering in the community, life and social skills development, continuing education and lifestyle enhancement.

Testimonial:
Why I like coming to Mainstream
I enjoy learning new things like cooking, baking, woodworking and taking the STEP Program. All the classes are fun but you have to follow the golden rules of respect and hard work. If you listen and try hard you can learn so much … like me. I can now print my name, work on the computer, take the bus, cook pasta, and work in the kitchen.

Mainstream offers a lot of different courses. I choose four different classes each term and these classes are helping me to be more independent. Right now I am working with staff to find a part-time job that pays good money”.
