Overview:

Provides help and hope to persons and families affected by Multiple Sclerosis. Information, education, support programs and advocacy enable individuals and families to maintain active and independent lives.

Program Investment by United Way:
1. Member Support Program
Providing current, factual information, referral to community resources, emotional and social support, enabling those with MS to better manage and cope with the disease. An estimated 1,000 residents in Niagara have MS, experiencing symptoms such as vision problems, loss of balance and coordination, extreme fatigue, body tremours and paralysis. Support is also provided for children of those with MS, who are often forced to undertake more responsibility in the home. The Information Support Program provides information and referrals to those with MS. Workshops and seminars are offered to increase knowledge about MS. Staff and volunteer counselors help those diagnosed with MS through the initial grief process and develop appropriate coping strategies. The information and compassion provided by the society is critical as diagnosis can cause many emotional, social and psychological issues for the individual.

Testimonial:
“The staff and volunteers have provided practical assistance, information and most of all an empathetic and understanding environment to voice my concerns and develop pro-active, positive strategies to live with this disease.”

2. Kidz Klub
This program is directed towards children of a parent with Multiple Sclerosis by providing supportive programs and resources to develop healthy, nurturing and productive lives. Often children take on care giving roles in the home and cannot participate in youth oriented activities. The Kidz Klub is open to children between the ages of 8 and 12 and gives them an opportunity to socialize and connect with other children affected by MS, while being educated and participating in recreational activities.

Testimonial:
“I was terrified when I woke up one morning and couldn’t move or feel my legs. But it was nothing compared to the shock and disbelief I felt when the doctor told me I had multiple sclerosis - an unpredictable, sometimes disabling disease with no cure. Feeling scared and confused I phoned the MS Society. They gave my family and me the information and support we needed to live with MS today, and have hope for the future.”
