Overview:
Provides services to survivors of sexual assault and sexual child abuse such as emotional support, confidential one to one counselling, group counselling, crisis intervention and management, medical/legal accompaniment and advocacy, and a 24-hour crisis line.
Program Investment by United Way:
1. Child Assault Prevention Program
The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Program is an educational program delivered to elementary students (gr.1-6) throughout the Niagara region annually. Through role plays and discussion, children learn strategies and techniques to deal with threatening and intimidating situations involving bullies, strangers and known offenders ( ie: incest/sexual child abuse & physical and emotional abuse).
A key component of CAP is "private time" where a child may speak to a counselor whereby they will be linked with appropriate services immediately. 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys experiences abuse by the age of 18. Early intervention can save years of abuse for the child.
2. Hospital Response Program (24 Hour)
Staff is on-call to provide immediate support for sexual assault victims. Early intervention is critical to prevent trauma from becoming deeply rooted in the victim. Those who receive immediate support are less likely to require long-term treatment for mental health, and are better equipped to resume their roles in their home and workplace.
