Overview:
Provides programs that are dedicated to the development of women of all ages, and their families, to improve their quality of life and opportunities for personal growth.
Program Investment by United Way:
1. Child and Youth Development
These recreational and leisure programs are for children of low-income families, including those temporarily housed in shelters operated by the YWCA of St. Catharines and others. Often families struggling with poverty or other issues are unable to access quality recreational programming for their children. Attendance at these programs can result in improved health, increased self-esteem, and well-developed life skills, therefore decreasing the likelihood these children will be dependent on social services in the long term.
2. Transitional Housing
Housing is provided for up to one year for women who are preparing to live on their own but still require some supportive services. These women typically come from a homeless situation or are in danger of being homeless. Services available to the women include counselling, life skills and pre-employment training. Transitional housing is designed to help the women become self-sufficient and contributing members of the community once they leave the program. The community benefits from a decrease in the requirement of expensive services such as shelters, hospitals and incarceration, the need for which often accompanies homelessness.
