Summary of United Way Best Practices for
Workplace Campaigns

Planning Stages:
• Proper corporate call involving a volunteer
• Cabinet member involved with account, in addition
to staff or loaned rep (for all Key & Major Accounts)
• Committee in place (larger worksites), e.g. specific roles
 like communication
• Employee Campaign Coordinator (ECC) appointed & trained
• Leadership Champion appointed & trained
• Partnership Analysis every 2-3 years
• Canvasser training
• Thank you letter to each donor

During campaign:
• Personalized pledge cards (name / amount given last year)
• Leadership canvassing (with personalized package)
• Recanvassing
• Use of agency speakers/presentations
• Communicate corporate match (if applicable)
• Agency Tours
• Thank you letter to each donor
• Incentive prizes (early bird / regular). Best results tend
to be day-off with pay / week vacation and/or spa/weekend
 get-away packages
• Leadership gift follow-up (thank you call & letter within
 2 weeks of gift)
• Canvassers recognized and thanked (by own
organization), e.g. appreciation lunch (food/event more
 appreciated than item/trinket)
• Retirees canvassed and involved in events

Ongoing:
• New hires canvassed throughout the year
• Package/post card for retirees upon exit
