In March 2008, United Way of St. Catharines and District was chosen by General Motors of Canada, to receive a 2008 Chevrolet Grand Uplander. The van seats 7 passengers and was donated to United Way who in turn, allow organizations throughout the Region to use it - at no cost! United Way oversees the coordination of the Community Wheels van and ensures all organizations have the opportunity to benefit from it. To date, more than 18 organizations throughout the Region have benefited from the van. Individuals who depend on agencies like the MS Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Alzheimer Society and Community Living have extended services and programs to those they serve. The van allows these individuals access to programs they might not otherwise benefit from - like support groups, sporting events and even new programs! The Fort’s Angela Fazio says the GM van has provided youth at her centre with new experiences and fun “Field trips to the Stratford Festival for example are teachable moments, engaging youth and ultimately changing lives…United Way and GM have made this possible…thank you for investing in our youth”
